What are dental fillings?

Fillings are restorative materials used to fill cavities or decayed portions of teeth. When tooth decay is left untreated, it can lead to pain, further decay, and even tooth loss.

A dental filling procedure prevents this progression, restoring the tooth’s functionality and appearance.

In what point would I require a dental filling? In what point would I require a dental filling?

If you experience any of the following, you may need a filling:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain when eating sweet, hot, or cold foods
  • Notice a visible hole or pit in your tooth

At Dr Ivana Bugwandeen’s family dental practice, we focus on early detection and prompt treatment to prevent complications.

What do I need to know about filling materials?

Modern dentistry offers various materials for fillings, but at our practice, we use composite resin. This is a mouldable tooth-coloured material we shape onto the tooth and cure with a special light. Composite resin is durable and blends seamlessly with your tooth, making it ideal for restorations.

What should I expect during the dental filling procedure?

After a comprehensive consultation and examination, we will begin your filling procedure.

  • Anaesthetic: We numb the tooth with a local anaesthetic to ensure you feel completely at ease during the process.
  • Tooth preparation: In order to place the filling, we need to remove any decay in the tooth. This is done with some light drilling and cleaning.
  • Filling: The composite resin is placed on the tooth and shaped, then cured with a special light until it hardens.
  • Finishing touches: We buff and file the tooth to match your tooth shape and bite.

What aftercare is needed for a filling?

While there is no specific special care necessary for a filling, it’s best to exercise some caution after the procedure. Avoid very hot or cold foods for a few hours and give the anaesthesia time to wear off before eating to prevent accidental biting of the cheek or tongue.
