Root Canal Treatment

Every single tooth plays a role in your radiant smile. However, sometimes, a tooth’s inner chamber becomes infected or damaged, causing pain and risking the health of the entire mouth. In comes root canal treatment, a procedure that restores the function of the natural tooth.

What is a root canal treatment?

In the heart of every tooth is a chamber filled with soft tissue called pulp. When this pulp gets infected or injured, it can cause pain or even lead to an abscess. A root canal treatment, or root canal therapy, is the process of removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning the inner tooth, and sealing it for protection.

What are the signs that I need root canal treatment?

While only a dental examination can determine the real need, some common symptoms include:

  • Severe toothache when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
  • A recurring pimple on the gums

What can I expect during the root canal treatment?

  • Diagnosis: Initially, we take an X-ray to view the shape of the root canals and check the surrounding bone.
  • Anaesthesia: The area is then numbed to ensure a pain-free and comfortable procedure. Rubber dam is then placed to prevent the leakage of strong materials.
  • Pulp removal: A small opening is made atop the tooth to access the damaged pulp, which is then cleaned out.
  • Cleaning and shaping: Using specialised tools, the inner chamber is cleaned and shaped, ensuring all bacteria and debris are eradicated.
  • Filling: Once cleaned, the tooth’s interior is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed.
  • Restoration: Often, a tooth that needs a root canal may need further protection, like a crown, to ensure it’s functionally robust and aesthetically pleasing.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Contrary to popular belief, a root canal is no more painful than a regular dental filling. With modern techniques and effective anaesthesia, Dr Ivana Bugwandeen ensures the procedure is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Many patients express relief after the treatment, as it eliminates the pain caused by the infected pulp.

What can I expect after the treatment?

You will undergo 2 to 3 appointments and must return until the final procedure is complete.

Post-procedure, it’s normal to feel some tenderness in the area for a few days, which can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Dr Bugwandeen will provide specific aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth healing process.

By opting for root canal treatment, you’re choosing to keep your natural tooth, maintain your natural bite, and, most importantly, keep that beautiful smile intact. Book your appointment today!
